Brain Health: Vascular Dementia

BRAIN HEALTH AND VASCULAR DEMENTIA

Vascular dementia damages brain health by reducing blood flow, depriving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients, often due to strokes or narrowed vessels from conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, leading to cognitive issues with memory, planning, and focus, which can be slowed by managing heart health and adopting a brain-healthy lifestyle. Symptoms range from sudden onset after a stroke to gradual decline, affecting thinking, behavior, and daily function, with a strong link between cardiovascular health and brain health.

How it Affects Brain Health

Oxygen & Nutrient Deprivation: Damaged blood vessels (from clots, narrowing) cut off the brain’s essential supply, impairing cell function and connections.

Location Matters: Symptoms vary based on the brain area affected, often appearing after strokes or small vessel damage (lacunar infarcts).

Mixed Dementia: Frequently occurs alongside Alzheimer’s disease, creating “mixed dementia”.

Common Symptoms

Cognitive: Memory loss, confusion, difficulty planning, organizing, problem-solving, or paying attention.

Behavioral: Mood changes, apathy, depression, agitation, personality shifts.

Physical: Impaired mobility, balance issues, tremors, speech/language problems.

Risk Factors & Prevention

Major Risk Factors: High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, lack of physical activity, and heart disease.

Brain-Healthy Lifestyle: Exercise increases cerebral blood flow and keeps vessels healthy, improving cognitive function. Managing cardiovascular health is key to slowing progression.

Management & Progression

Slowing Progression: While there’s no cure, treating underlying conditions (blood pressure, diabetes) and adopting healthy habits can slow the disease.

Diagnosis: Involves cognitive tests (like Mini-Mental State Exam) and brain imaging (CT, MRI) to see vascular damage.
